Definite Articles

All the German nouns have one of the three genders i.e Masculine, Feminine or Neuter gender.
The gender of the noun in expressed with one of the definite articles der, die, das.

The article "der" is used with nouns having Masculine gender.
Example : Mann means Man. This has masculine gender, hence expressed as der Mann

The article "die" is used with nouns having Feminine gender.
Example : Frau means woman. This has feminine gender, hence expressed as die Frau

The article "das" is used with nouns having Neuter gender.
Example : Auto means car. This has neuter gender, hence expressed as das Auto

And all the plural nouns use the article "die".

Few points about German nouns:
Most of German learners feel remembering the genders of nouns as one of the most difficult tasks. It is advisable to remember the nouns along with their articles.

All the German nouns begin with a capital letter. Ex: das Auto, die Frau, der Mann etc.
